Voronezh residents will ask Putin to save the apple orchards from large-scale overbuilding.
The activists are collecting signatures of local residents.
Voronezh, 15 June 2021 //
The defenders of apple orchards in Voronezh have already collected more than thousand signatures for a petition to V.V. Putin, the President of the Russian Federation. It is noteworthy that the collection of petitions began on Russia Day, June 12, and citizens are planning to collect much more than 1,000 signatures.
The citizens were even standing in lines for that.
We intend to protect the apple orchards on Lomonosov Street to the last.
Voronezh residents have begun collecting signatures for a petition addressed to President Vladimir Putin. The activists are asking to ban the felling of trees for the construction of a new residential area. To sign the document, residents of the nearest residential complexes literally queued up. In two days, they managed to collect about 1000 votes.
All the animals want to save this unique Apple orchard and even the dogs are in line so that their masters sign up the petition to the President // Все животные хотят спасти этот уникальный яблоневый сад, и даже собаки стоят в очереди, чтобы их хозяева подписали петицию Президенту.
According to the activists, they have many complaints about the development concept, but one of the main ones is the microdistrict congestion.
“This is a very good place to walk with children, play sports, enjoy the nature. Apart from the apple trees, just a lot of other trees have already grown there: pines, maples, oaks. Just two minutes from home – and it feels like countryside – I really like it,” admits the citizen Andrey Soshin.
There are some information stands in the garden, informing people not to litter in nature areas //
It was decided to draw up a petition after the development plan of the territory had been officially published. According to the initiators, this was the last straw. The new houses are designed for almost 25 thousand people. Local residents are confident that the construction of such huge blocks of flats will be a problem for both them and their prospective neighbors.
“For some reason, there is only one school, although considering the number of people that should live there, and according to the standards, there should be at least two two of them. How will people move along the roads? What will happen to Moskovsky Prospekt, which is already overloaded with traffic every morning?” says a local resident Maxim Davydov.
In the photo you can see the territory Before and After the clean up day in Apple Garden
The theme of building apple orchards has become very resonant for Voronezh. One of the DSK structures has received the right to build objects on the “valuable” territory, having offered an unprecedented amount at the auction – 1.69 billion rubles. This is how much the developer will pay per year for renting 52 hectares between Lomonosov, Zagorovsky, Moskovsky Prospekt and Moskovsky Kvartal residential complex. It is planned to build a million square meters of housing there. By the way, the concept of building apple orchards was first shown to Voronezh residents at Zodchestvo forum, but it was sharply criticized by both experts and residents.
For your information:
Jago Keen (Great Britain) compared a UK city of similar size to Voronezh. The city of Birmingham sees an annual net benefit to society from greenspace and parks of £600million (48 billion rubles). For every ruble Birmingham invests in its green infrastructure it sees a return of over 24 rubles to society. [See Ref.13] Voronezh has that capacity. Voronezh could see a return of 24:1 on every ruble it spends on green infrastructure. More details: https://englishmag.ru/jago-keen/
World No.1 Novak Djokovic downs Stefanos Tsitsipas to become first man in Open Era to win each major at least twice.
Novak Djokovic became the first man in the Open Era – and just the third man history – to win each of the four Grand Slam titles at least twice, thanks to a battling 6-7(6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 victory over fifth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas in Roland-Garros final on Sunday.
Djokovic rallied back from two sets down for the second time this fortnight – and sixth time in his career – to overcome the 22-year-old Tsitsipas and secure a second Roland-Garros crown, five years after he captured his first.
The world No.1 has clinched a 19th major title, which puts him just one adrift of the men’s all-time record-holders Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, who currently top the leaderboard with 20 each.
Topics of Ecology and Recycling are always timely, but nowadays it gets more and more attention from the ordinary people and of course from the media, as well. Just imagine, how many kilos of garbage we throw away every day? Plastic bottles, carton packets, plastic bags, food leftovers, read papers, used batteries, you don’t need to go too far – just look into your garbage bin. In Russia, about 90% people throw it in a dustbin instead of recycling it separately… Only thinking about nature now, we can have a better tomorrow!
ECOLOGY AND SMART RECYCLING
Have you ever seen coloured tanks for separate collection of garbage? The colour of the tanks [1], the number and filling [2] can be different, it is important that their contents are recycled. From such waste [3] new things are created.
Separate waste collection is a system in which waste is divided into types so that they can be recycled [4] and created new things, and not just discarded[5]. With such a system, our city, our country is less polluted with garbage, and for the production of things you do not need to spend resources: oil, timber, aluminium.
In Russia, many large cities already have plants for processing plastics, waste paper, metal and other useful garbage. According to all businessmen, they lack only one thing: recyclable materials [6]. With the advent [7] of a separate collection system, they are ready to increase production.
What can be done?
Greenpeace launched a new project [8],
irecycle.ru “One Million for Separate Collection.” They want to collect a million signatures [9] under an appeal [10] to mayors [11] of cities and regional governors [12] with the requirement [13] to make mandatory [14] the installation of tanks for separate waste collection in each yard.
Speaking of a separate waste collection, we mean solving a specific problem that concerns each of us, our home, yard, city. After all, a separate collection is primarily the health of our children, who will not have to inhale the air poisoned [15] by incineration plants [16]. If you are ready to start to collect garbage separately today, you can find the addresses of recycling points on recyclemap.ru.
Compost, Recycling, or Trash
Still confused about what waste goes in which bin? Let’s figure out!
Composting
Some waste goes into composting, it is a biodegradable [17], organic waste, meaning it can be broken down. It is sent to a location where it is then decomposed [18], recycled into nutrient-rich soil [19] that can be used to fertilize plants and crops [20]. Basically, a continuous cycle that puts nothing to waste.
Compostable Items:
– Fruits, vegetables
– Fish products
– Pasta, bread,
cereals, rice
– Houseplants, in- cluding soil
– Some paper
– Coffee filters, tea bags, looseleaf tea
Many items can be thrown into the compost bin. For the most part, almost any food (except cooked, meat, and dairy) is compostable.
In the USA there is an organics and food waste hauling company dedicated to diverting food waste from the landfill [21] to local composting facilities. Their program is designed to reduce your waste bill, as well as your environmental footprint, so you can save money and help save the planet.
Food scraps make up 40 % of the waste we throw away. Composting at home allows closing the waste loop. Grow food and not landfills.
And what about Russia.
In our country, there is no similar company for collecting food waste in cities. Some people arrange compost in the apartments using special equipment.
Recycling
Like composting, recycling turns waste into more recyclable, useful material. From one item to the next, this process helps reduce the number of overall waste in the world. As the saying goes: “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”.
What Can Be Recycled?
Metals
Paper
Aluminum cans, metal cans
Bottles and jars
Glass bottles and jars, plastic bottles and jugs
Electronic Devices (Devices have a special recycling process, and should be recycled separately from regular waste)
Trash
Hopefully, after recycling and composting, there won’t be much to throw away. Remember, any non-biodegradable and non-recyclable waste goes to trash, which then goes to landfills.
Just knowing a little more about composting, recycling, and trash can make you a better-informed citizen. It’s a world issue [22] that could become a bigger problem in the future. And as statistics have shown, waste issues can be avoided. So start doing these things now if you think it’s important.

The first thing you need to know is the structure. The reading section goes after Listening, and it is composed of 40 questions divided into three or four blocks. You will be given a Question list and an Answer sheet which should be filled in 60 minutes.
Reading tasks vary, and you may meet one of the following types:
Matching heading questions
True False Not Given/Yes No Not Given questions
Matching Paragraph Information questions
Summary Completion questions
Sentence Completion questions
Multiple Choice questions
List selection
Choosing a title
Classification questions
Matching sentence endings
Table Completion
Flow Chart Completion questions
Diagram Completion questions
Short Answer questions
Today, we are going to review one of the aforementioned types – Matching heading questions.
You will receive a list of headings which you should match with paragraphs given. Sometimes, one or two of headings will be extra.
This task evaluates your skill to identify the difference between main and secondary ideas, to understand the message of paragraphs and their content.
Here are the general tips to follow:
Read instructions carefully – answers are typically numeral (I, ii, iv). Do not confuse them with numeration of paragraphs – they are often letteral (A, B, C). Check twice before transiting your answers on the Answer sheet.
There are often more headings than you need – keep it in your head.
Put marks on your Question sheet – do not be afraid to work actively with your Questionnaire.
Do not try to match headings with the words in paragraphs! You match with a meaning.
Distinguish the main idea and extra information.
Pay attention to headings that are similar to each other.
There can be only one right heading for each paragraph – even though it does not seem like that.
Cross out already used headings.
Concept of Daylight saving time. Retro clock on the yellow background. Top down view with copy space
You have got two options of further work there: you may read headings firstly and then turn to paragraphs or vice versa.
Reading headings firstly:
Read the headings first – do not try to cover all passages once you see it. Since each of the paragraphs is dedicated to a different topic, you will forget what the first ones were about by the end of the reading. Do not waste your time.
Once you turn to the paragraphs, underline key phrases in each of them. Commonly, they are in the very beginning of a paragraph – in the first, rarely the second sentence. Stress words that carry the main idea. You may summarize the main idea next to each paragraph in one-two sentences.
After which paragraph look at those main ideas and find the most suitable headings.
Try to paraphrase the headings. Find synonyms in an observed paragraph. Choose the most suitable heading.
Reading sections firstly:
Pass the headings, go straight to the paragraphs.
Underline key phrases in each of them. Commonly, they are in the very beginning of a paragraph – in the first, rarely the second sentence. Stress words that carry the main idea. You may summarize the main idea next to each paragraph in one-two sentences.
Then, turn to headings, read and paraphrase them.
Find synonyms in an observed paragraph. Choose the most suitable heading.
Have you ‘liked’ and ‘followed’ this page yet? It is linked to the official IELTS page and is regularly updated with quiz questions relating to the various parts of the IELTS exam, as well typical grammar and vocabulary-related questions.
You should find this website very useful. It has sections on writing, reading, speaking, listening, grammar, vocabulary, as well as advice and opportunities for practice, and a section where you can find all the material that you can download for free e.g. sample tests, sample answers for the writing etc. You can also look at what other students have written for Writing Part 1 and Part 2, together with feedback on their work.
You might already have visited the British Council Learn English page. Did you know it also has an IELTS section? The British Council Learn English IELTS section has some online practice materials, test papers and tips to help you get ready for all four modules of the IELTS test. You can also watch a video where learners from all over the world share their views and opinions about IELTS (How do they compare with yours?!) and a series of videos that focus on the speaking module of the test.
Doing practice tests is a good way to get used to the feeling of doing an IELTS exam. At first you may need longer than the time limit assigned to each test component, but make sure that before you do your IELTS exam you have done some practice tests in the correct time limit e.g. 1hr for the Writing Paper Parts 1 AND 2. Here, at IELTS Exam-Net, you can find a collection of freely accessible practice test materials for all four test components.
There is lots of material for IELTS preparation that you can use on this website. It looks at each of the four components as well as relevant grammar and vocabulary for both General and Academic IELTS (the vocabulary activities on this site for Academic IELTS are based on the Academic Word list – do you know it? See the Vocabulary section for more information!). It provides you with lots of opportunities for learning how to approach the exam, practising for it, and, with regards to the writing part, seeing what other students have produced.
Visit this website for daily IELTS ‘lessons’ from ‘Simon’, who is an ex-IELTS examiner. For example, the latest lesson is ‘IELTS Writing Task 1: using words from the chart’. There are categories for each of the components, and the writing is divided up into Academic Part 1, Academic Part 2 and General. There is also a section dedicated to general advice and one for useful grammar and vocabulary.
READING
Make sure you prepare for the correct reading test: the Academic IELTS reading test and the general IELTS reading test use different texts. The General IELTS test uses things like newspaper articles, while the Academic test using texts that are more academic in nature (funnily enough!). Decide which test is more suitable for your requirements and then use practice materials that are relevant to it.
This is a link from IELTS Buddy that gives an overview of the reading component of the exam. It clearly explains the different question types, the requirements of each of these, and offers some useful tips.
This is a comprehensive page from DC IELTS which focuses on the reading component of the IELTS exam. Here, you can find links to tutorials that focus on each of the reading question types (as with the overview above, yes, but have a look at both as you may find one easier to understand than the other!), tutorials that focus on increasing your reading speed (being able to read fast is very important as you only have an hour to complete the reading exam), tutorials focusing on the necessary reading sub-skills (e.g. skimming and scanning), a band calculator (so you can translate your reading score into an IELTS Band)and some exam tips.
LISTENING
The listening paper is the same, whether you are doing General or Academic IELTS.
From the DC IELTS website, this page gives you a clear overview (the same applies as with the reading: look at more than one overview so that you can check your understanding and find the overview which makes most sense to you) of the listening component of the IELTS exam, together with links to 10 lessons that focus on various sub-skills that you need to be confident with in order to do well in this component. It also boasts a Band Calculator that you can use to translate your listening scores into IELTS bands.
On the very site that you are visiting now, Independent English, you can find this post on IELTS friendly podcasts. It gives you links to a range of podcasts on IELTS style topics e.g. science and global problems, and offers suggestions for using these effectively for your listening preparation. Remember, it is good to listen extensively, not just to do test practice, in order to develop your listening.
SPEAKING
The Speaking test is also the same whether you are doing Academic IELTS or General IELTS.
It is very important to know how you are being assessed. Here, you can look at the assessment criteria for the speaking component of the exam and measure yourself against them.
Here is a comprehensive overview of the speaking component. This DC IELTSpage contains a useful map of the speaking exam, some tips for success, some training videos, some practice questions, some information about the exam format and some advice on how to use preparation time. And that’s just for starters!
WRITING
Make sure you prepare for the correct Writing paper. As with the reading, the Academic IELTS and General IELTS writing components are different. Academic IELTS requires you to write about a diagram (e.g. a graph, a chart, a map, a process…) in Part 1 and to write an essay in part 2. You are expected to use a formal, academic register. In General IELTS, task types have a more general focus e.g. writing a letter. Most of the links in this section apply to the Academic IELTS Writing paper. However, you may find that on the websites in question, you could also search for and find information about the General IELTS writing paper.
This post from the IH London Blog helps you prepare for the IELTS writing component, by focusing on how to structure a Part 1 and a Part 2 piece of writing.
Here, ‘IELTS Buddy’ provides sample Writing Part 1’s for all the possible task types and analyses the process of producing an answer to a Writing Part 1 task.
As we mentioned in the Speaking section of this post, it is important to know how you are being assessed. This is a link to the criteria used for marking Part 1 of the writing component of the IELTS exam.
This is a blog post from TEFL Reflections, containing a podcast focusing on the Task Achievement category of the assessment criteria for Part 1. Why not listen to it and find out more about this category of the assessment criteria? You would be ‘killing two birds with one stone’: practising your listening AND learning more about writing! NB: This blog also has other useful posts relating to the IELTS exam including focus on writing and on speaking. If you put ‘IELTS’ in the search box, you can find these.
Did you know that the Writing paper part 1 can potentially give you not just one but TWO diagrams to comment on? As if one wasn’t bad enough! What do you do then? Don’t worry, this article on Exam English explains how to approach an IELTS part 1 with two sources of data within a single task, e.g. a graph and a table.
Do you know how important it is to make a plan before you start writing? This blog post on the IH London blog focuses on how to improve your writing score for part 2 by planning more effectively.
Fields, fields, fields
I’m so small
Fields, fields, fields
I’m too small
How do You cross a field thru the fire?
How do you cross the field if you’re alone?
А-а-а?
Heeeey?
Should I wait for a helpful hand?
Whaaat?
Who will stretch out for me, girls?
For ages now
From night till dawn
From the deepest of the night
We are waiting for a ship
A Sailing ship
Waiting very much
From night till dawn
Waiting for a ship
Waiting for a ship
But what’s the wait?
Stand up, let’s go!
Every Russian Woman
Needs to know
You’re strong enough to bounce against the wall
(x2)
Every Russian Woman
Needs to know
You’re strong enough to bounce against the wall
(x2)
What’s the rattling about?
Hey, beauty!
Are you waiting for your Prince?
Hey, beauty!
You’re 30!
Hello? Where are your kids?
You are cute overall
But should lose some weight
Wear something longer
Wear something shorter
Oh you grew up without a father?
You should do what you don’t want to
You sure you’d don’t want to?
Don’t want to?
You SHOULD!
Listen up, really!
We’re not a flock
Hey, crows, shoo!
Leave me alone (give me a break)
Now learn it by heart:
I don’t blame you a bit
But damn do I like myself
They just fight, always fight
Go round and round to just fight
But never pray
Boy without dad
Girl without dad
But such broken family
Can’t break me
You’re gonna, you’re gonna break the wall (ха-ха)
Р-р (о-о-о)
Every Russian woman needs to know, uh (ха-ха)
You’re strong enough, you’re gonna break the wall (хей-хей)
Every Russian woman needs to know (ха-ха)
You’re strong enough, you’re gonna break the wall (хей-хей)

The President’s address at the military parade
President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Dear citizens of Russia,
Dear veterans,
Comrades soldiers and sailors, sergeants and warrant officers, midshipmen and sergeant majors,
Comrades officers, generals and admirals,
Happy Victory Day! The Victory had a colossal historic significance for the fate of the entire world. It is a holiday that has always been and will remain a sacred day for Russia, for our nation.
It is our holiday by right, for we are blood relatives of those who defeated, crushed, destroyed Nazism. It is ours because we descend from the generation of victors, a generation we are proud of and hold in great honour.
Our dear veterans, we bow before your courage and strong spirit and thank you for this immortal example of unity and love for our Motherland.
You proved that only together it is possible to achieve what seems impossible. You defeated a merciless enemy, defended your home, your children, and your country. You came out an absolute victor in the battle against Nazism and eternalised the memory of May 9, 1945.
We will always remember that it was the Soviet people who demonstrated the ultimate heroism. During the harshest times of war, during the crucial battles that determined the course of the fight against Nazism, our nation was alone on the toilsome, heroic and self-sacrificing road to Victory. Our people fought to the bitter end at every frontline, in the fiercest battles on the ground, at sea and in the air.
People of all ethnicities and faiths fought for every inch of our soil. For the fields on the approaches to Moscow, for the Karelian rocks and Caucasus passages, for Vyazma and Novgorod forests, for the shores of the Baltic Sea and the Dnieper, for the Volga and Don steppes.
The heroism of Soviet troops and the unfaltering spirit of civilians are perpetuated in the glorious titles of Hero Cities, awarded to Moscow and Leningrad, Minsk and Kiev, Stalingrad and Sevastopol, Murmansk and Odessa, Kerch and Tula, Novorossiysk and Smolensk.
The unbreakable bond between frontline fighters and those at the home front ensured that our troops were provided with everything they needed for the Victory, thanks to the efforts of plants in the Volga region and the Urals, Siberia and the Russian Far East, the cities of Kazakhstan and Central Asian republics. We remember those who offered shelter and support to the evacuees who were forced to leave their homes.
Today we gratefully celebrate the memory of an entire generation of great heroes and dedicated workers, and remember our frontline fighters, brave partisans and members of the underground resistance.
We can feel the never-ending pain of the people of Leningrad who suffered through the siege; the concentration camp prisoners, and the countless tragedies of the people who lived in the occupied territories.
We bow to the blessed memory of those whose lives were taken away by that war; the memory of sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, grandfathers, husbands, wives, brothers, sisters, fellow soldiers, family members and friends. We mourn the veterans who have passed.
I ask for a minute of silence.
(A minute of silence begins.)
Friends,
This year, we celebrate 80 years since the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
June 22, 1941, is one of the most tragic dates in our history. An enemy attacked our country and invaded our land to kill and to spread death and pain, horror and immeasurable suffering.
This enemy not only wanted to overthrow the Soviet political system but also to destroy us as a state, as a nation and wipe our peoples off the face of the earth.
We responded to the invasion by the Nazi hordes with a united, formidable and unstoppable determination to repel that invasion, to do everything in our power for the enemy to be defeated and for the criminals and murderers to receive inevitable and just punishment.
The Soviet people fulfilled their sacred oath, defended their Motherland and liberated Europe from the ‘brown plague’.
The Soviet people issued a historic verdict to Nazism with the power of their weapons on battlefields and with their moral strength and righteousness, the self-sacrificing bravery of soldiers’ mothers and the faithfulness of those who waited, every day, for a message from the frontline from their loved ones. The Soviet people won thanks to the power of kindness and charity that has been inherent to our national character since the earliest times.
This power was manifested in the heroism of doctors and nurses who saved the wounded and fought for every life in the trenches, in the heat of battle, and in hospitals on the frontline and on the home front.
Back then, in 1941there were still four years of the most violent war ahead. That war was a strike at our future, our youth, our youngest generation and, therefore, those who were never to be born.
The war brought upon us so many unbearable ordeals, grief and tears that it is impossible to forget. Those who are plotting new aggressions cannot be forgiven or justified.
It has been almost 100 years since the time when the abominable Nazi beast was gaining insolence and predatory strength in Central Europe. The slogans of racial and ethnic supremacy, anti-Semitism and Russophobia were becoming more and more cynical. Agreements designed to stop the landslide towards a world war were easily broken off.
History demands that we learn from it. Unfortunately, attempts are made to deploy a large part of Nazi ideology and the ideas of those who were obsessed with the delusional theory of their own supremacy.
This ideology is not only supported by radicals and international terrorist groups of all kinds. Today we are witnessing the surviving members of those killing squads and their followers trying to rewrite history and justify the traitors and criminals whose hands are smeared with the blood of hundreds of thousands of civilians.
Our people know too well how this can end. Every single family in our country cherishes the sacred memory of those who fought for our Victory and we will always be proud of their feats.
Russia is consistently defending international law while continuing to protect our national interests and the security of our people.
Our guarantees are the glorious Russian Armed Forces, descendants of the victorious troops, and, of course, our joint efforts for the sake of our country’s development and the wellbeing of Russian families.
Our veterans, their fates and loyalty to the Motherland is the example we follow. It is the summit that we must strive for while reaffirming the significance and the value of the great Victory in our thoughts and deeds, in our present and future endeavours for the sake of our Fatherland.
Glory to the victorious nation!
Happy Victory Day!
Hurrah!
Marat Safin, according to public opinion, is considered the best Russian tennis player in
modern history. By the way, Marat and his sister Dinara are the only siblings who became the #1
tennis players in the world (he became the first in the ranking on 20 November 2000, and Dinara —
on 20 April 2009). We would like to share Marat’s thoughts on whether or not parents bring up their
athletes correctly
Marat Safin: Maybe I will say something that parents will not like, but how do athletes acquire fears? Everything starts with the influence of their parents…
