Today, I’m pleased to announce the United States will join One Trillion Trees initiative because a Labor government will set a target to plant two billion trees by 2040.

I’m standing in a beautiful ancient woodland near my home in Berkshire, and it’s been a real sanctuary during the weirdness of these last few months. That seems like a lifetime ago, but only back in December. Trees like these ones around me were being promised in their millions by politicians across the political spectrum to suck up carbon and help us reach net zero emissions. Well, after this unlikely game of tree top trumps, the government have pledged to plant 30000 hectares of trees a year across the UK by 2025.

And yet so far, the figures are well short. In fact, the covid crisis has resulted in nurseries having saplings left in cold storage that might never be planted. Jamie Hurst is from Jayantha Growers in Warwickshire.

The numbers that are going to be destroyed this year because of coronavirus, because plantings are not going ahead in the region of 10 million, which has a major financial impact. You know, the investment in our product is everything from one year to three years. To get it to the marketplace and then to destroy 10 million trees is tragic. And it’s not the first time every year there will be a bonfire or something. We’re trying to predict a marketplace that is inherently unstable.

We’ve seen political aspirations that came out of the election with conservative manifesto saying 30000 hectares by 2025. While we can’t work with aspirations because if that turns into 2026 and we have the stock in 2025, there will be a huge bonfire.

This crisis shines a light on just how difficult it will be to hit the increased tree planting targets. But why are we trying to do it in the first place? Well, we can’t solve the climate crisis just by cutting emissions. We also have to remove some of the CO2 that’s already in the atmosphere. If we’re to stay within safe limits now, trees can play a part in that. They take in carbon dioxide during photosynthesis and essentially convert the gas into solid would burn it or let it rot.

So and much of that gas goes straight back into the atmosphere. Thomas Crowther is the chief scientific adviser to the UN’s trillion tree campaign and professor of global ecosystem ecology at Zurich. His work on mapping the global potential for tree planting has been seized on by politicians across the planet. We modeled essentially where we think trees might exist on the planet in the absence of human activity, and then when we ignore urban land and agricultural land and existing forests and that show that there’s about nought point nine billion hectares of land available for restoration.

So these are the places where forests would naturally exist. And if we could undo the degradation that’s happened there, we could restore just over a trillion trees.

Every naturally forested country has huge regions that were, as we identified, degraded, I think, in the UK where it was around four million hectares. But obviously in the paper we focused primarily on the tropics because these are the regions where you get the largest amount of carbon capture. We’re certainly not advocating for planting trees over native grasslands or in peatlands or wetlands, which are equally important repositories of carbon and biodiversity. So, you know, those lands must absolutely be protected.

Tom’s work suggests there’s enough room for a trillion more trees. That’s a land. They’re equivalent to China and America combined. And that planting all of those trees could absorb twenty years worth of emissions. Exciting stuff. But the study made a lot of other scientists angry. Some have accused them of wildly overstating the potential for carbon capture and worry that governments will see tree planting as an easy way out of reducing actual emissions.

Obviously, there’s all these benefits, but but we certainly got a lot wrong in the communication of it. I think we focused so much on the amount of carbon that can be draw down, which is a hugely uncertain thing.

There’s a lot of uncertainty in that model, really.

I want to say that all of the criticisms were actually perfectly good and valid considerations.

But actually, I don’t think any of them change the result that there is a huge land available for forest restoration and it can have an incredibly powerful impact on drawing carbon down from the atmosphere if we do it in a responsible way.

Despite the criticism of his calculations on how much carbon trees can lock away, Tom stands by the key figure of how much land could be reforested and feels that even if politicians or big business wish to misuse the idea that trees can replace the need to reduce emissions, now we got their attention. We can use trees to build consensus.

For me, one of the most exciting things is how it’s engaged people from the furthest extremes of the political spectrum. You know, we’ve got people like Al Gore on one end of the spectrum, and then we’ve also had engagement from Donald Trump on the other. And we’ve seen similar things happening in in the UK and other countries all around the world. Now, obviously, many people are seeing this as the positive opportunity that it is to restore biodiversity and help in climate change.

But many are also seeing it as an opportunity to greenwash, essentially to ignore the very real challenges of cutting emissions or conserving existing ecosystems.

But what this provides is a platform for us to all come together, to try to find consensus and to build an ecologically and socially responsible movement. And if we can do that and get everyone behind this, I think it could be an amazing opportunity for bipartisan leadership.

– Добрый день!
– У Вас столько направлений деятельности, как Вы всё успеваете? Расскажите о юридической специфике работы. Почему именно юрист?
– На самом деле секрет в правильном планировании – всё чётко и структурированно расписано (смеётся). Юрист – потому что, закончил Военный юридический ВУЗ, долго служил в силовых структурах, потом стал защищать права граждан и организаций в юридическом гражданском и арбитражном поле. Юридическая специфика работы нашей компании – мы занимаемся разными категориями дел, есть специалисты во всех узких областях права, но основа – это гражданские, арбитражные, административные и семейные дела.
– Расскажите о вашей легендарной борьбе за права воронежцев в противостоянии с «платными парковками»?
– В 2018 году, я объединился с группой единомышленников: Пальчикова Оксана, Рыжков Сергей, Слезунова Алёна и на тот момент, нам оказывал поддержку депутат городской Думы – Артём Рымарь из партии «Справедливая Россия». Нам удалось оспорить штрафы и помочь жителям нашего города, еще два года данные парковки были безоплатными для автовладельцев, но потом Госдума приняла поправки в КоАП и ситуация немного изменилась, но и сейчас я успешно помогаю жителям города в борьбе за свои права, в том числе и с «платным паркингом». На сегодняшний день много помогаю бойцам, вернувшимся с СВО и их семьям в защите их прав.
– Что касается СВО и поддержки наших бойцов, насколько я знаю, Вы регулярно поддерживаете наших ребят, лично возите гуманитарную помощь, участвуете в сборах. Расскажите подробнее?
– Да, мной лично доставлено в зону СВО, в Луганскую, Донецкую, Запорожскую, Белгородскую и Курскую области тонны гуманитарной помощи, собрано много средств и необходимых продуктов, обмундирования, медицины и т.д., всё точечно доставлено из рук в руки. Кроме того, оказываем психологическую и реабилитационную помощь вернувшимся, через вовлечение их в занятия спортом, в частности – боевыми искусствами и спортивными единоборствами, я являюсь ответственным секретарем Воронежского филиала Российского союза боевых искусств и исполнительным директором Благотворительного Фонда развития и содействия боевым искусствам. Кроме того, я являюсь одним из лидеров спортивно-патриотического общественного объединения «Обитель Храбрых».
– Как помогаете бизнесу?
– У нас есть Бизнес-клуб, который объединяет ряд предпринимателей и собственников бизнеса города Воронежа. Устраиваем «мастермайнды», тренинги, проводим выезды, оказываем юридическую поддержку, печатаем типографию – от визиток и буклетов, до листовок, баннеров и календарей, изготавливаем логотипы и формируем личный бренд. В сфере бизнеса делаем, практически, всё.
– Знаю, что у Вас есть не только юридическое образование, какие ещё?
– Да, помимо юридического образования (кстати, диплом с отличием – прим.ред.), я окончил аспирантуру с отличием, написал кандидатскую диссертацию на тему: «Тактические особенности производства расследования и раскрытия преступлений в сфере компьютерной информации, при активном противодействии со стороны преступных элементов», параллельно получал педагогическое, управленческое, спортивное, психологическое образование и много повышений квалификации различных. Я вообще выступаю за постоянное саморазвитие, обучение, но и делами надо заниматься.
– Расскажите о своих спортивных увлечениях, как пришли к ним, чем занимаетесь.
– С детства занимаюсь боевыми искусствами и спортивными единоборствами. Всё началось с того, что родители меня отдали на каратэ в 5 лет. Тогда, в 90-е годы это было очень популярно, занятия проходили в спортзале общеобразовательной школы и, где – то до 9 лет я занимался каратэ. Потом, я увидел на стадионе Труд на «день физкультурника» показательные выступления школы боевых искусств «Парящий Орёл», и так я попал в ушу – вид боевых искусств и спорта, который так или иначе сопровождает меня всю сознательную жизнь. Много участвовал в соревнованиях, и продолжаю участвовать, являюсь КМС по ушу и еще ряду спортивных единоборств, неоднократным призером и победителем различных соревнований, чемпионатов разного уровня, включая международный турнир – «Московские звёзды ушу». Чем бы я не занимался, ушу и мой Учитель – Белов Юрий Владимирович, заслуженный тренер и деятель физической культуры и спорта, всегда идут «рука об руку» со мной по жизни и я признателен своему Шифу (Учитель – по китайски – прим.ред.), за всё, что со мной есть в боевых искусствах и не только. Конечно и маме моей, и семье спасибо (улыбается). Также, занимался в годы учебы в Военном ВУЗе – самбо, боевым самбо, дзюдо, рукопашным боем (различными версиями), моими тренерами были, также, заслуженные и легендарные личности – Никитин Олег Зонилович, Кадурин Владимир Викторович. Сейчас, помимо, практики ушу, практикую каратэ Фудокан-Шотокан – Сэнсей Плотников Геннадий Викторович, Бирманский бокс – под руководством Попова Константина Николаевича, джиу-джитсу – инструкторы Попов Константин, Анохин Сергей, активно работаем в направлении развития смешанного стиля со Свиридовым Романом.
– Ну, и расскажите об общественной и политической сфере деятельности.
– Как я уже говорил, постоянно помогаем нашим бойцам, возим гуманитарную помощь, оказываем юридическую, психологическую и спортивную поддержку, кроме того постоянно поддерживаю Волонтерский благотворительный клуб «ПРО.Добро», оказываем поддержку многодетным и малообеспеченным семьям, помогаем одеждой, проводим мероприятия и т.д. Помогаем воронежцам оспаривать штрафы за платные парковки. Кроме того, уже дважды участвовал в выборах в городскую и областную Думу, от партии «Справедливая Россия», показал достойные результаты, что говорит о безусловном доверии мне и моей деятельности со стороны наших жителей.
– И крайнее – как относитесь к изучению языков, сами говорите на других языках?
– Вообще, к учебе и саморазвитию отношусь исключительно положительно. Что касательно языков – я довольно неплохо говорю на английском языке, но стараюсь его всегда совершенствовать и изучаю еще китайский и японский языки.
– Выбор этих языков, как – то связан с восточными единоборствами?
– Да, но не только. Уверен, что они тоже пригодятся.

PUTIN: Mr. President, ladies and gentlemen, our negotiations have been held in a constructive atmosphere of mutual respect. We have very thorough negotiations that were quite useful. I would like to thank once again my American counterpart for the proposal to travel out here to Alaska. It only makes sense that we’ve met here, because our countries, though separated by the oceans, are close neighbors. So when we’ve met, when I came out of the plane and I said, ‘Good afternoon, dear neighbor. Very good to see you in good health and to see you alive.’ I think that is very neighborly. I think that’s some kind words that we can say to each other. We’re separated by the strait of Bering, though, there are two islands only between the Russian Island and the U.S. Island. They’re only four kilometers apart. We are close neighbors, and it’s a fact.
В.Путин: Уважаемый господин Президент! Дамы и господа! Наши переговоры прошли в конструктивной и взаимоуважительной атмосфере, были весьма обстоятельными и полезными. It’s also important that Alaska has to do with our common heritage, common history between Russia and the U.S., and many positive events have to do with that territory. Still, there is tremendous cultural heritage, back from the Russian America, for example, Orthodox churches, and a lot of- more than 700 geographical names of Russian origin. During the Second World War, it was here in Alaska that was the origin of the legendary air bridge for the supply of military aircraft and other equipment under the Lend-Lease Program. It was a dangerous and treacherous route over the vast emptiness of ice. However, the pilots of both countries did everything to bring closer the victory. They risked their lives and they gave it all for the common victory.
Важно также, что с Аляской связана значительная часть общей истории России и США, многие позитивные события. Так, здесь и по сей день сохраняется огромное культурное наследие эпохи русской Америки: православные храмы, множество, более 700 географических названий, имеющих русское происхождение. В ходе Второй мировой войны именно на Аляске начиналась легендарная авиамагистраль для поставок боевых самолётов и другой техники по договору ленд-лиза. Это был опасный, сложный маршрут над громадными ледяными пространствами, но лётчики и специалисты двух стран делали все, чтобы приблизить победу, рисковали, отдавали свои жизни для общей победы.
I was just in the city of Magadan in Russia. And there is a memorial there dedicated to the Russian, the U.S. pilots. And there are two flags, the U.S. flag and the Russian flag. And I know that here as well, there is such a memorial. There is a military burial place several kilometers away from here. The Soviet pilots are buried there who died during that dangerous mission. We’re thankful to the citizens and the government of the U.S. for carefully taking care of their memory. I think that’s very worthy and noble.

We’ll always remember other historical examples when our countries defeated common enemies together in the spirit of battle camaraderie and allyship that supported each other and facilitated each other. I am sure that this heritage will help us rebuild and foster mutually beneficial and equal ties at this new stage, even during the hardest conditions.

It is known that there have been no summits between Russia and the U.S. for four years, and that’s a long time. This time was very hard for bilateral relations, and let’s be frank, they’ve fallen to the lowest point since the Cold War. I think that’s not benefiting our countries and the world as a whole.

Минувший период был очень непростым для двусторонних отношений, и, скажем прямо, они скатились до самой низкой точки со времён холодной войны. It is apparent that sooner or later, we have to amend the situation to move on from the confrontation to dialog, and in this case, a personal meeting between the heads of state has been long overdue, naturally, under the condition of serious and painstaking work, and this work has been done.

In general, me and President Trump have very good direct contact. We’ve spoken multiple times. We spoke frankly on the phone. And the special envoy of the president, Mr. Witkoff, traveled out to Russia several times. Our advisers and heads of foreign ministries kept in touch all the time, and we know fully well that one of the central issues was the situation around Ukraine.

As I’ve said, the situation in Ukraine has to do with fundamental threats to our security.

We have the same roots, and everything that’s happening is a tragedy for us, and terrible wound. Therefore, the country is sincerely interested in putting an end to this conflict.
Более того, мы всегда считали и считаем украинский народ, я говорил об этом неоднократно, братским, как это ни странно прозвучит в сегодняшних условиях. At the same time, we’re convinced that in order to, to make the settlement lasting and long term, we need to eliminate all the primary roots, the primary causes of that conflict, and we’ve said it multiple times, to consider all legitimate concerns of Russia and to reinstate a just balance of security in Europe and in the world on the whole.

I agree with President Trump, as he has said today, that naturally, the security of Ukraine should be ensured as well. Naturally, we are prepared to work on that.

I would like to hope that the agreement that we’ve reached together will help us bring closer that goal and will pave the path towards peace in Ukraine.

We expect that Kyiv and European capitals will perceive that constructively and that they won’t throw a wrench in the works. They will not make any attempts to use some backroom dealings to conduct provocations to torpedo the nascent progress.

It is clear that the U.S. and Russian investment and business cooperation has tremendous potential. Russia and the U.S. can offer each other so much in trade, digital, high tech and in space exploration.

We see that arctic cooperation is also very possible, in our international context. For example, between the far east of Russia and the West Coast of the U.S.

Overall, it’s very important for our countries to turn the page to go back to cooperation (real collaboration).

It is symbolic that, not far away from here, the border between Russia and the US, there was a so-called International Date Line. I think you can step over, literally, from yesterday into tomorrow, and I hope that’s- will succeed in that, in the political sphere.

And in the end, I would like to add one more thing. I’d like to remind you that in 2022, during the last contact with the previous administration, I tried to convince my previous American colleague, it should not- the situation should not be brought to the point of no return, when it would come to hostilities and accept it quite directly back then, that is a big mistake.

Today, when President Trump is saying that if he was the president back then, there would be no war, and I’m quite sure that it would indeed be so. I can confirm that. I think that overall, me and President Trump have built a very good business-like and trustworthy contact, and have every reason to believe that moving down this path, we can come and assume it better to the end of the conflict in Ukraine. TRUMP: Thank you very much, Mr. President, that was very profound, and I will say that I believe we had a very productive meeting. There were many, many points that we agreed on, most of them, I would say, a couple of big ones that we haven’t quite gotten there, but we’ve made some headway. So there’s no deal until there’s a deal. I will call up NATO in a little while, I will call up the various people that I think are appropriate, and I’ll of course, call up President Zelenskyy and tell him about today’s meeting. It’s ultimately up to them. They’re going to have to agree with what Marco and Steve and some of the great people from the Trump administration who’ve come here, Scott and John Ratcliffe. Thank you very much. But we have some of our really great leaders. They’ve been doing a phenomenal job.

I think he’s probably seen things like that during the course of his career. He’s seen- he’s seen it all. But we had to put up with the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax. He knew it was a hoax, and I knew it was a hoax, but what was done was very criminal, but it made it harder for us to deal as a country, in terms of the business, and all of the things that would like to have dealt with, but we’ll have a good chance when this is over.

– У нас сейчас проходит восьмое мероприятие благотворительное в рамках замечательного проекта «Воронеж — город доброты». Около трех-четырех лет назад мы придумали такое мероприятие. Все события в рамках этого мероприятия по благотворительности, по экопросвещению, по сборам для животных, особенно безнадзорных, мы проводим в рамках этого проекта. Все средства собранные в рамках этого спектакля, сегодня это Воронежский стендап, идут в фонд «Право на жизнь», из которого мы потом имеем возможность позаимствовать средства на лечение животных, на их дальнейшее устройство в семьи и на улучшение их качества жизни.
– А как получается объединять людей таким мероприятием?
– Мы не просто так объединялись, это было долго, поэтапно, но в рамках нашего большого жизненного цикла мы знаем друг друга, доверяем друг другу. Сформировали оргкомитет по интересам, кто чем может быть полезен, чтобы помогать. Здорово то, что ряд разных предпринимателей объединились и помогают все кто чем может. Бесплатная аренда залов, бесплатные угощения, бесплатные ведущие, бесплатные выступления. Буквально, символические иногда взносы за какие-то мероприятия, поэтому мы искренне вообще благодарны людям, которые поддерживают такой замечательный проект.
– Планируются ли похожие мероприятия этим летом?
– Будет еще одно похожее мероприятие, у нас сегодня, я сказала, восьмое, наверное, все-таки девятый у нас благотворительный спектакль, а десятое (мероприятие) — будет рок-группа, ВИА группа «Васильки» 29 августа. Если у нас получится, он будет в «Ауре». Если получится, в промежутке у нас есть еще один интересный спектакль, предложенный нашим предпринимателям, мы тогда, возможно, в июле его проведем.

How does the Holy Fire come about?
The process of occurrence of flame tongues deserves special attention. About 10 o’clock in the morning on the Holy Saturday, the day before Orthodox Easter (this year Orthodox and Catholic Easter is celebrated the same day on 20 April 2025) the religious procession begins to move towards the Jerusalem Orthodox Church, headed by the Patriarch and the higher clergy. After they come close to Kuvuklia (the chapel of the Holy Sepulcher), the events begin to develop as follows:
That the believers did not have doubts as to where the Blessed Fire originates from, the Patriarch reveals himself and remains in one white sub-figure, under which nothing can be carried.
He is examined by representatives of the police of Turkey and Israel by tradition, which has existed since the 14th century.
Toward the entrance to the Cusculos, the Patriarch is approaching along with similar ranks from the Armenian, Coptic and Syrian apostolic churches. They will see the Blessed Fire first after the Patriarch.

How does the Holy Fire come down?
After the Patriarch and priests remain behind the first doors of the Cubiculum, they appear in front of the room with the Tomb of Christ. The Metropolitan of Jerusalem will go alone into it, but a few steps away from him will be a representative of the Armenian church. The descending of the Holy Fire takes place in several stages:
The Patriarch starts prayers praising Jesus Christ.
Appeal to God can take as many hours, and several minutes.

Why does the Holy Fire do not burn?
The sheaf of candles held by the Patriarch consists of 33 pieces (according to the number of years spent on the Earth, Jesus). The only one who personally saw the secret of the Blessed Fire takes out a bundle from Kuvuklia and passes it to the Armenian Metropolitan. He shows it to the believers, and they light their candles from it. Fertile fire – scientific explanation and facts
In 2008, the skeptics had a chance to learn the nature of the Holy Fire. Before the Great Saturday, a Russian physicist Andrei Volkov was admitted to Kuvuklia, who received the approval of the Orthodox Church for the installation of equipment with sensitive sensors. Before him, no one knew the answer to the slippery question, how scientists explain the convergence of the Holy Fire, the research of Andrei Volkov gave mixed results:
A few seconds before the appearance of the flame at the Holy Sepulcher, the physicist recorded an unusual long-wave electrically impulse that arose spontaneously.
During the ignition of cotton wool, spread on the headstone cover, the oscillations of the pulses multiplied.
Measurements of power have shown that a flash of fire can be compared with the operation of a low-power welding machine.
Scientific diagnostics of the crack on the column at the entrance to Kuvukliya proved that such damage could occur solely under the influence of electricity. (In 1578 a priest from Armenia decided that the mystery of the Holy Fire would be revealed to him and obtained permission from the clergy to enter first into the Kuvukyla. Orthodox priests did not protest and remained at the door. The column before the entrance to the Sepulcher of the Lord cracked and the flames began to emanate from it)
On Holy Saturday, April 19, 2025, the Holy Fire descended in the Church of the Resurrection of Christ (the Holy Sepulchre) in Jerusalem.
Traditionally, the prayer for the descent of the Holy Fire was led by Patriarch Theophilus III of Jerusalem. At the same time, representatives of various Christian Churches, including the Russian Orthodox Church, as well as many pilgrims from around the world, were present in the temple.
From the moment of the descent of the Holy Fire, Christians begin to greet each other with Easter words: “Christ is risen!” – “He is risen indeed!”

Roman Kostomarov is not just a Russian figure skater. He is an Olympic champion who performed in figure-skating dancing with Tatiana Navka. Two-time world champion, three-time European champion, three-time winner of the Grand Prix finals and many other Russian championships. He was recognized as an honored master of sports.
Роман Костомаров не просто российский фигурист. Он олимпийский чемпион выступавший в танцах на льду с Татьяной Навкой. Двукратный чемпион мира, трехкратный чемпион Европы, трехкратный победитель финалов Гран-при и многих других чемпионатов России. Признан заслуженным мастером спорта.
In January 2023, Roman Kostomarov got into hospital, where he was in a medically induced coma until March 2023. Roman was then informed that he needed an urgent leg amputation operation. And from that moment on, another life began for Roma and his family.
В январе 2023 года Роман Костомаров попал в больницу, где он находился в медикаментозной коме до марта 2023 года. Потом Роману сообщили, что ему нужна срочная операция по ампутации ног. И с этого момента началась другая жизнь для Ромы и его семьи.
There was a successful first attempt to walk on prosthetics. Classes at the gym, where he gained his former weight. Playing tennis with his daughter. And six months later, the first attempts to go skating on the ice. And the audience was able to see Roma on ice on December 17 at Ilya Averbukh’s gala show “Together and Forever”.

На момент выступления в ледовой сказке у Романа болело горло, но он не догадывался, что уже на тот момент его легкое уже «цвело». После окончания ледовой сказки, у Ромы оставались только шоу в Подмосковье на улице.

RU: 9 января Роман ехал домой после бани и почувствовал невероятный кашель, сильную боль в своем боку, и когда он приехал домой, то ему вызвали скорую. На следующий день, когда Оксана Домнина (жена Романа Костомарова и тоже чемпионка мира) позвонила в больницу, ей сказали, что Роман лежит в реанимации без сознания. Романа подключили к ИВЛ (Искусственная вентиляция легких), так как самостоятельно не мог дышать, потому что поражения легких было под 90% и ввели в медикаментозную кому. В России выживают только 13% больных, отлученных от ИВЛ.
EN: On January 9, Roman was driving home after a sauna (or Russian bath) and felt an incredible cough, severe pain in his side, and when he arrived home, an ambulance was called for him. The next day, when Oksana Domnina (Roman Kostomarov’s wife) called the hospital, she was told that Roman was unconscious in intensive care. Roman was connected to ALV (Artificial lung ventilation), as he could not breathe on his own, because lung damage was under 90% and was put into a medically induced coma. In Russia, only 13% of patients survive who are weaned from AVL.

– The idea of camping, how did you come up with this?
– Well, initially the idea was simple that, having a lot of experience travelling around Europe, I noticed how well this infrastructure is developed there. I never noticed it until I tried it myself. It turned out to be extremely convenient. This is real freedom of travel, because you go without planning anything. I found the place just immediately in the next 5, 10, 20 kilometers, I liked the place, some kind of campsite, or maybe I stayed in that very beautiful place, stopped, spent the night, lived there for a couple of days, walked, and then drove on. And, traveling around Russia all the time it seemed to me that I miss it (comfort, facilities) very much.

My name is Nikolay Dmitriev, Moscow. I am developing an international startup in the field of medicine, as well as developing a gallery of modern art in Moscow. We, together with my large family, traveled a lot by car, visited many European countries, as well as around Russia.
And let me tell you about camping as an opportunity to give the dream of free and affordable travel to millions of Russians. Yes, nature-oriented tourism is actively developing in our country, a lot of infrastructure and accommodation facilities are being created. And popular destinations are being developed, such as Baikal, Altai, Krasnaya Polyana, but if we take a step to the side, then the number of tourism infrastructure and accommodation facilities drops drastically. And even that existing infrastructure is often inaccessible for an ordinarytourist. And here there is a great solution in camping, as a form of mass affordable tourism. Yes, of course, this type of tourism seems extremely doubtful to Russians today, because they have not yet got acquainted with this type of tourism and we have very few campsites now, but this type of tourism is very popular in Europe and in the world. There are now about 30,000 campsites in Europe, and in France alone – 8,000 of them and more than 40% of nights are spent in campsites, now in the high season in summer. And now, it seems to me, we have a wonderful window of opportunity to start actively developing camping tourism in Russia.

There are not enough comfortable parking lots where you can stay, set up a tent or spend the night in your car, and at the same time get access to the most basic needs – a shower, a toilet (bathrooms), garbage area place and where to cook food. In Russia, unfortunately, there are no such places or it is at a rudimentary level right now.
And it seemed to me that it was important to develop it, and I only suggested ASI (Agency for Strategic Initiatives) how to do it.
And they told me: “Nikolay, the idea is cool. We have such a forum (they said in April) a cool forum, go there. Offer your idea. Speak about it.” And when I submitted the idea, I had already systematized it a little more.
Being an economist, PhDin Economics, I have a major in industries (Industrial Economics), I realized that camping is not just an opportunity for affordable recreation and free travel. It’s actually a huge industry. In fact, camping is such a basic economic stimulus for many many other industries, because it tourist has to invest in so many related products for this activity.
We start with the fact that there is already a car, or somebody rents a car. For a car, you need at least a tent, you need rugs, sleeping bags, and then you need dishes, some kind of (gas)burners, you need chairs, tables, and so on. And a bicycle rack, for example, a roof rack, a roof box (Thule), and all this stimulates the average small business to produce, it is such a handicraft for an average small business.
And I thought that this would be exactly the very incentive for the development of medium / small entrepreneurs and production in Russia.
Camping – for some people it seems to be something outdated, but in fact, if you look at modern camping products that exist on international markets, they all include an insane amount of newtechnologies, some modern innovative materials and so on. And all this stimulates the entire economy.
That is why the idea was called “Camping tourism as a window of opportunity for micro and medium-sized businesses”, and it stimulates everything. Not only stimulates in terms of… In fact, even more stimulated…
There, starting from the fact that people start coming there, people start spending money in these campsites and related territories, some museums, buy farm products, amusement parks, rent bicycles, rent something else, for equestrian sports and other… lots to rent.
On the one hand, we get people traveling freely around the country, throughout the country, especially in Central Russia, where we have a lot of agglomerations that you can leave, 5-6 hours away and you can already rest somewhere, stop. On the other hand, you stimulate the industrial sector, production, small-scale production and small business, which will produce goods related to this.
And overall, it’s growing into a huge industry. As on the example of European countries, Australia, the USA, we see that this industry consists not only of renting accommodation… But there is a heap of heaps of related industries. That’s sort of the point of this story.

Well, come on, by and large, we don’t have them. We have attempts to create campsites, but, unfortunately, there are many nuances. First, the lack of culture is a very important point. We have people who got used to it since Soviet times, they were called “mattress toppers”. On one side, there are tourists who put on a backpack, stuff it with a rug, a sleeping bag, a tent, food, they all carry it on their backs. They reach point A and then go to point B, on foot, stopping somewhere, in the mountains, in the forest, and so on. This is one kind of wild tourism, we do not stress on it. It does exist, as if it were sports tourism.
And there is tourism that I called “mattress toppers”, – those who come to the coast of some picturesque place, choose some kind of site for themselves, and create a camp there from two weeks to a month. Depending on the time of the vacation.
And they begin to live there in wild conditions. And what does it mean to live there in wild conditions? They have to organize everything themselves. Organize a toilet yourself, somehow organize a shower there, where to throw garbage and somehow get to this place. Some get there by car, in Soviet times they got on their own feet, set up camps, someone who had a car went for groceries, the rest of the people got on their own…
And it was also the same in the 90s. Since the 2000s, when a car became more affordable, everyone drives cars.
And now, if you go along the banks of picturesque places, there will be two options. The first option is that it is fenced and occupied by someone, something has already been built there, some kind of camp site or something. Or if it is a wild place, there will be wild tourists. And that means everything there will be, pardon my French, well crap. Because what do tourists do? They don’t even want to take out the garbage, even… many people, I saw it on Lake Onega,
people seem to be standing on the shore, collecting all the garbage in bags, ok, they collected everything, and then, if they stand there for a very long time, they do not want to carry it somewhere far, to the garbage containers. They take out to some nearestroad fork. Someone there spontaneously arranges a dump of these garbage bags, which are mostly from food, groceries – wild animals also smell it, they come to this smell, tear the bags, take it all away for long distances. As a result, the whole territory is polluted with the worst waste, it is plastic.
In Soviet times, again in the 90s, we did not have so many plastic containers. We had paper, glass and metal containers. Everyone knew that you burned the paper, you hand over the glass – this is money, who will throw away glass jars? If only you accidentally broke them… And everyone knew that metal containers should be thrown into the fire, burned, and then buried, there nature will do its own thing, in the ground, in a few years it will turn into rust … That is.
Now it’s all plastic. It needs to be processed centrally – to be transported somewhere. And where to take it if it is maybe 100+ km between two settlements in the area of Lake Onega? And you are standing in the middle. “Why to go 50 km? Oh, well, here we’ll drop it somewhere.” Or they leave the garbage somewhere by the road, “some type of bus stop, someone will pick it up”. Who will take it? Why do they have to pick up garbage there?
That’s why we have this problem, but in my opinion the problem is the lack of camping. If there were campsites, pay 500-1000 rubles for parking per night – for getting a warm shower, toilet, cooking place, you get a certain security.
For example, if the owner of the campsite is a responsible person, he can treat the surface from ticks and other things in the spring. So it will be a safe area for children. You don’t have to constantly think “to smear them against ticks”, but here everything is already processed, safe, and so on and so forth, and not so much money.
– And, most importantly, it is a big plus for health, isn’t it? And it improves public health.
– Yes, no doubt, because in the same campsite …
Camping, first of all, is a family vacation, and it is understandable that children need to be occupied with something and do something themselves. So what are people doing? That is, not people, but campsites themselves can make playgrounds, volleyball courts, badminton courts, people will come there, go in for sports, have fun, relax, make new acquaintances, make new friends, and, by the way, there is very well shown in the French film Camping (2006). That’s what it’s called. For some reason, people go to the same campsite every year, because they already have a bunch of friends. They are friends of their whole families there. Although they meet exactly once a year at this campsite.

– Yes, I recommend watching it, it’s a very funny film, it shows very well how people of different incomes live together. There is such a story that there is a man in an expensive car, with a high income, he is a doctor or something else, I don’t remember, he didn’t know what camping was at all. His car breaks down and he ends up in this camping environment. I don’t remember the details, but he begins to understand that this is a whole different life, a whole different layer, a lot of people live there. It’s not like they’re all poor there, no, they’re not poor.
It is very important to note here that for everyone camping is a synonym for a cheap vacation, in fact it is not. People, once accustomed to living in campsites, felt this freedom… But what is camping? This is actually a cottage on wheels. And you can change the summer cottage every day. Today you are standing in one campsite, tomorrow you are in another, and you arrive at the third: “God, it’s so beautiful, so cool. I’ll stay for three days,” and you stay at another point for three days … Or maybe 4 days you stay, and then again go further, and so you can travel to a lot of places, visit, see everything and always have the opportunity to spend the night somewhere, it’s affordable. And in the end, what do these tourists do? They start developing and investing in a yacht on wheels. The budget is not limited by anything, only the fantasies and
possibilities of your personal budget. We remember the movie “Meet the Fockers” (2004) where it was well shown. This family, Robert De Niro played there. He had such a bus, with accommodation, with all the affairs … and so on and so forth. This is absolutely crazy – in the States it is clearly visible, there are motorhomes for a million, for 2 million dollars. And all this stimulates the economy.

Well, if we are talking about statitistic data, then it’s right to ask a question to the Internet, because in all languages it’s different, different terminology for designating everything, but there is such a well-known resource, I’m talking about Western statistics, Statista.com – there are a lot of materials you can search and see a lot … You can find out, for example, that in the 20th in Germany, in the year 2020, 200,000 new motorhomes and caravans were registered, in Germany alone.
– In one year?
– In one year. 200 thousand.
– In 2020, just in Covid?
– Just in time of Covid, because the demand for camping has grown very much, because of domestic tourism. You can go not too far, but you want to rest. Plus camping gives social distance. You live in nature, in the air. You have these parking lots – 50, 70, 100 square meters, the neighbor will be there in 3-5 meters in the fresh air, respectively, nothing will reach you. You don’t go to stuffy canteens and so on, the only place where your paths cross is in the sanitary zone, which is constantly processed – toilets, showers, there is constant processing. Therefore, this is enough, and campsites in this regard turned out to be safe and affordable for recreation.
To understand the numbers: in Europe – more than 30,000 campsites for half a billion people;
in Russia for 150 million people – well, you know, just a few, let’s admit it, let’s say 150, even if 300, someone will say that there are 500-600 of them there, someone will put tourist sites and tourist camps there and name 1000 there, but these are illusions, of course. This year I purposefully drove through the campsites in Russia, in the north-west, I can say, honestly, I did not meet a single campsite where one could say the European (exemplary) standard.
France has the best classification because they are one of the leaders in camping history. Again, how did they become leaders in camping history, because after the war, when people needed a decent rest, a worthy rest somehow, and the people became impoverished, it was necessary to somehow give rest, they opened 4,000 municipal campsites so that people could at least somehow relax in nature, in the summer. And it turned into a crazy industry for them, more than 8 thousand campsites.
Let’s take Finland, sparsely populated Finland, they have only 200 campsites, more than in Russia. And all the campsites are of a very good standard. By the way, half of them are year-round.
And one more, the main misconception that is often said, “Well, we have a different climate, but they have a better climate” … And so, in Finland, I have already named 200 campsites, in an even more severe climate. In Italy, campsites, I can say, open in April, close in October, the season starts a little earlier, it ends a little later, but in general, the peak of the camping season in all of Europe is summer. And the main consumers of camping services use them in the summer (1/3 of the whole year), but this does not negate the popularity of this type of recreation in Europe.
– What is camping anyway?
– Camping, it seems to people that you definitely need a caravan or a motorhome, that it makes no sense to go without it.
In fact, motorhome = camping, but camping does not mean motorhome. Camping starts from a tent, from a place where you can put up a tent, come by car, park the car nearby – this is a very important moment. You park the car, this is your suitcase on wheels and a tent nearby. You also get there, I don’t know, chairs, armchairs, etc., your barbecue, the stove on which you cook. You arrange all this, and here is your actual cottage on wheels, you have pitched your camp. And here you live, you drink, here you sleep, and so on. And then, regarding the winter, in the USA, important statistics, 50% of tourists live in tents. That is, they come by car, live in tents, or they can come by motorcycle, or you can come by bike if the bike tour is with tents. This is 50%, 50%. In our country, of course, the figure will be 95+ per cent (without tents). But we need to start with offers of campsites.
– Of course, they don’t exist at all.
– They do not exist at all, there is no development system.
Why it was important for me, maybe, to reach the level of the President, it was necessary to show the importance, how important this industry is from the point of view of the economic multiplier.
Because, unfortunately, there is no such a pronounced stakeholder, that they are always looking for, some kind of big sponsor, so that they “Oh, of course, if we build these campsites there, then the economy will work directly, and that’s who will be the beneficiary”. No, there is no such obvious beneficiary, a major serious one. It all consists of a lot of small business entrepreneurs, and let me remind you that our President set a goal: 25 million self-employed entrepreneurs in 2030, and we are self-employed entrepreneurs who, on the one hand, will make it possible to produce all these related products.
And it must be recalled that in Russia, the only one, who somehow was closing the position of camping goods, was Decathlon (sportsware).
Decathlon is gone, a niche has opened up, in general, a lot of Western manufacturers have left the market. A manufacturer of bike racks and so on… This opens up a niche for our entrepreneurs to produce all this. Yes, no doubt, according to the laws of economics, the one who produces it in tens of thousands will always have a better price than the one who produces it in hundreds of pieces. But you have to start somewhere, you have to move. Either it is necessary in quality, or in price … It is impossible to get the same quality with a smaller circulation for the same money or cheaper than manufacturers do it in bulk.
Plans for the development of camping in Russia
Well, now we are working together with ASI. There are a lot of legislative changes, initiatives, because a lot of things need to be changed, redone. Plus, there is a lot going on in different associations, in the Russian Union of Tourism Industry. There is an association of caravaners, we communicate with them, discuss what to do, how to do it.
Plus there is a change at the government level. As you know, Rostourism was abolished and transferred to the Ministry of Economic Development. That is, you need to find someone in the government who will oversee this, who will deal with it. Probably, maybe it was right to give tourism functions to the Ministry of Economic Development, because this is the development of the economy. That’s what I am talking about – it’s the economic multiplier, because this is the very place where you can get a multi-billion dollar industry with very little investment. But here it is very important that the economy should be based not on demand, but on supply.
Until we make an offer in the form of a network of convenient campsites, give entrepreneurs the opportunity to do it easily, and until it starts working, we don’t give an opportunity to unwind, we will not see this industry.
And we will not see this industry if we do it piece by piece. If one region reports “And we have made three campsites”, “we already have three campsites”, this is about nothing. It’s like if in Moscow they made bike rentals and made three points where you can take a bike, no one would use it. But as soon as they made a huge huge network, where a person can travel for 15 minutes (ride), 5 minutes from point to point, it immediately worked.
– Yes, it’s interesting, we always lag behind the West…
– Well, we lag behind somewhere, somewhere we overtake very much…
– Yes, in some ways…
– In the digitalization of the economy, we overtake very much.
– Well, just about bicycles, if you take it, in Canada it was already developed already in 2015…
– Undoubtedly, it was popular there for a long time, but if you remember, it’s a good question on the topic of the economy, when Moscow introduced bicycles, everyone said, “Who needs these bicycles? No one needs these bicycles.”
