Georgia is famous for its ancient cultural heritage and traditions of hospitality. Everyone is ready to help and will be happy to show you around.
Many people know Russian, but the younger generation speaks English much better. Speaking of Southern Russia, Georgia is the nearest country where you can practice English.
Tbilisi is a picturesque city where you can see many buildings, both old and new. Married couple Nickolay and Alla (facebook.com/nikala.tour) were glad to show me around and make an informative tour of interesting places.

Since its growth as the capital, Tbilisi repelled the attacks of countless enemies. War and ruins were frequent occurrences for it. We will not find here any ancient buildings … From ancient Tiflis (historical name of Tbilisi), there are only the remains of the fortress, the foundations of buildings and the waves of the Kura River.

According to one legend, a Georgian king hunted in the dense forests. He shot a pheasant with a bow and arrow, but the bleeding animal fell into the hot sulphur spring and was instantly healed. The king was so amazed that he ordered to build a city in this place (traditionally it is believed that this happened in 458 A.D.).

Archaeological studies of the region, however, have revealed that the territory of Tbilisi was settled by humans as early as the 4th century B.C., making the city one of the most ancient in the whole world.

On the steep banks of the Kura River, the monument to the king Vakhtang will definitely be noticed. Vakhtang I Gorgasali king (440-502 A.D.) was one of the greatest figures of the Georgian state. The Persians gave him the name “Gorgasal,” which means “Wolf ‘s Head.” Near the monument, there is Metekhi Church named after the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Built no later than in the XII century, the church is considered to be one of the most remarkable ancient monuments of Georgia.

On the hill of Sololaki you can see a magnificent statue. “Kartli’s Mother” is a monument 20 metres high (photo 5). The figure of a woman with a sword and a cup is a personification of the capital; the mother’s goodwill for friends and threats to her enemies. It was established in 1958 in honor of the 1500th anniversary of Georgia.

If you look on Tbilisi from the top, you will see the most magnificent Church in all of Transcaucasia, named “Tsminda Sameba” (4). According to tradition, at the beginning of construction, sacred objects were embed-ded into the foundation: stones from the Jordan river and mount Zion, handfuls of soil from Jerusalem and part of the relics of St. George, the patron Saint of Georgia.

Interesting Fact
The name Tbili or Tbilisi (“warm location”) was given to
the city because of these numerous sulphuric hot springs, where the Abanotubani district was formed.
