From 14th to 23rd September, Russian tennis fans witnessed two significant events in the tennis calendar – the Davis Cup match between national teams of Russia and Belarus, which took place in Moscow, and, just afterwards – SPB Open tournament, which was held in St. Petersburg.
St.Petersburg Open.

Despite the low international rating, the Belarusians had a good team headed by the semifinalist of the Wimbledon (2000) – Vladimir Volchkov. In addition, one of the important links of the Belarusian team was experienced doubles player – Max Mirniy.

After Karen Khachanov’s victory over Yegor Gerasimov (7/6 6/3), the Russian team captured the lead in the tie, but soon, thanks to the efforts of Ilya Ivashka over Daniil Medvedev (7/6 6/4), the Belarusians first leveled the score. And, after Mirniy and Vasilevskiy prevailed over Khachanov and Rublev (7/5 6/3), Belarus broke forward with a score of 2-1.
But the Russian team did not intend to give up. At first, Khachanov confidently beat Ilya Ivashka, who hadn’t almost had chances, 6/2 6/4.
After the match, Karen said how important it was to «cheer up» the audience to get additional emotional support from the stadium.
The intensity of the passion in the decisive match between Medvedev & Gerasimov was outrageous! In the toughest first set Daniil prevailed with a score 7/6, but Gerasimov quickly came back and equalized the score, winning the second set 6/3.Everything was decided in the third set, where, thanks to the selfless support of the spectators, Medvedev was better with a score 6/3 and got a decisive point for the Russian team.
Already in February 2019 the Russian team will compete to qualify for the updated Davis Cup final stage, which is now to resemble the FIFA World Cup, only this time among national tennis teams.
According to the reform of the Davis Cup – the championship will be held in Madrid for two years (2019-2020), and now Russian fans will less often see their tennis players on their homeland, because all the play-off stage will be played in one city.
St.Peterspurg Open 2018.

At a tournament in St. Petersburg, the chief editor of «EnglishMag» Vladislav Tishchenko had an exclusive interview with Daniel Medvedev, who won the decisive point of the Russian team in Davis Cup 2018 a week earlier:

EnglishMag: Congratulations again on your victory in the Davis Cup tie! The last week was very important, you got marrried also, so you can even say – historical. What helped to achieve the final success in the Davis Cup?
Daniil Medvedev: First of all, this is the merit of our team, the Russian National Team, every participant, because in any case, even if someone was ready or not, no matter how – we always support each other: whether it’s a loss or a victory.
Everyone knows that each of us will fight to the end, up to the very last point. If in singles competitions you can give yourself a slack, and if you go somewhere tired, you can say: «Man, I can’t do that – I can’t fight for every point»; but, here in Davis Cup you play not so much for yourself, as for your country, for your partners, for the fans – so you can not just let go and surrender. All of us naturally felt very disappointed that we often failed to win the Davis Cup matches (since 2016 Russia couldn’t win a Davis Cup tie). This time everything was different. Therefore, it is the merit of each of us, and I am very glad that I managed to bring a decisive point to the team.
EM: Yes, indeed, the historical week. Regarding the change of the format of the games, the Davis Cup is being changed (more details at daviscup.com/en/news/290055.aspx) and the novelties are put forward in the youth final tournament NextGenATP Finals (lots of innovations, for example, linesmen are replaced by robots, the set is played up to 4 games, five sets maximum, a decisive point at deuce, more details at nextgenatpfinals.com/en/innovation). Do you like this change?
DM: There are also its pros and cons, something I like – I liked to play the tournament (NextGen ATP 2017, Medvedev won the third place, losing only to the winner, Chung) itself in this format.
Another thing, would I like to play all ATP tournaments the same way? Not a fact. But, perhaps, it would even be interesting to introduce some innovations, try them out. If it works, that’s good. If it doesn’t, then that’s ok, too. In general, l’m for something new, but, of course, it mustn’t completely change tennis, but gradually and in an interesting way.
EM: The fact that everything is automatic, without judges, is it normal?
DM: That’s of course nonsense! I will, as an expressive player, not be shouting at anyone or swearing (laughs). If the machine is wrong – you can not change anything.
There was one empire, but he could not influence anything. Of course, he could have a warning, intervene if you played the ball from two bounces, but these are trifles. It is clear that there must be an empire, since the machines cannot yet fully release the judges from work.
EM: This year, you won the first two titles in your career, but with God’s help, it will be much more. What is the most memorable? Sydney or Winston-Salem?
DM: Both are remembered great. Sydney, because it’s the first victory. It will, in any case, be remembered, there was a crazy final (1\6 6\4 7\5 against Australian de Minaur – Ed.) – One of the craziest matches this year. A bit strange tournament for me, to be honest. I didn’t seem to be showing my best game, but managed to win, take the title, earned 250 rating points, felt that I could win at the tournaments.
And Winston-Salem was remembered for the fact that there I played at a very high level and did not give a chance to almost any opponent – and it pleased me.
EM: And what match did you like most throughout this year?
DM: There were a lot of matches, where I kind of played badly, but with a strong-will was able to pull it out, there were also those, where I played just well. Therefore, it is impossible to select one.
EM: But, talking about your whole career, which match is the most important? A win at Wimbledon over Wawrinka last year?
DM: Now, I think, the Davis Cup! Anyway, this is not a World Group, not a final, but this is a decisive point. Generally speaking, I played well, but it was very difficult – Yegor Gerasimov played crazy tennis, and I’m very glad that I managed to defeat him.
At the FIFA World Cup, were you rooting for Russia?
DM: Yes, I was watching almost every match. I am also a fan of Bayern Munich, so I supported the Germans. But just at these moments, I played the tournament, so I saw only one of their matches against the Swedes. When I found out that Germany lost to Korea … I was not upset, but, of course, I was very much surprised with such a result.
EM: It’s interesting, how is your ordinary day built? What helps you to recover when playing in such a tense rhythm?
DM: There are different procedures that we use with the trainer and the team. Sometimes spa treatments and protein. In general, such decisions are made by my team. And it happens the other way round – you feel yourself that now you just need to let go and rest for three days, not thinking about anything else. Eat and do whatever you want. And it is what gives you a positive result.

Mikhail Youzhny read his own poem after winning the match at St.Petersburg Open 2018

I’ve been a professional photographer for long enough now to start getting invited to judge some local photography contests. In doing so I have been struck by the fact that so many of the pictures, especially those of people, could have been dramatically improved by the application of just a few simple ideas.

With that in mind, here are a few things to think about the next time you take a picture of someone. Who knows, you might even want to enter it in your own local photography contest.
1. TURN THE CAMERA AROUND
It is the easiest thing in the world to just pick your camera up and hold it horizontally to take the picture. Cameras are designed to be naturally held this way but it produces an image in what is called a landscape format, where the picture is wider than it is tall. As the name suggests, this is very good for landscapes.
Turning the camera on its side will produce an image in portrait format (taller than it is wide) that is much better suited to pictures of people. It’s obvious when you think about it, people are taller than they are wide so they will always fit the frame better if the camera is held this way round.
Using the camera this way might feel slightly awkward at first but, with a little practice, you’ll soon get used to it. The only times a landscape format works best is with a group of people or if you go close enough for a “head and shoulders” shot or you deliberately want to include something else in the background of the shot.
A general rule for a good photograph is that the subject “fills the frame” and, once you have turned your camera on its side, this becomes much easier to do. It’s almost essential if you want to include their whole body but you would only need to do that if what they were wearing was important to your picture.
Normally it’s best to go in until there is just a little space either side of them and a little more space above their heads. This will usually mean you are cutting them off around the waist. For various technical reasons, it is better if you don’t get physically closer than about 6 feet (2 meters), especially if you’re using flash.
Another thing that makes a good photograph is if there is nothing to distract the eye from the main subject. Filling the frame will help a lot with this but every subject has to have something behind them so try to keep this as plain as possible. The sky (especially on a cloudy day) might be the most obvious choice but it’s not usually the best.
This is because it is much brighter than it looks to the human eye and, unless you know how to compensate your exposure for that, may give you an underexposed picture. Even when you do compensate, there is a great danger of your subject’s hair just disappearing into the washed out sky. This hardly ever looks flattering.
If you’re near a building, consider having your subject stand close enough to it so that there is just a plain wall in the background. If there is nothing obvious in the vicinity, try standing a bit further away and zooming in. In most cases this will throw the background out of focus, making it less distracting and making your subject stand out much more clearly.
Be careful if you have a zoom larger than about 4X because it may be difficult to avoid camera shake if you zoom right in with one of these. Ideally, you would use a tripod in these situations but that’s getting a bit beyond the realms of simple photography.
It’s great when the sun comes out. All the colors are brighter and people find it much easier to smile. However, bright sunlight produces hard dark shadows which can have a very unflattering effect on someone’s face if they are at the wrong angle. It is much easier to take pictures of people on a cloudy day because, no matter which direction they face, the lighting won’t change too much.
Of course, we can’t control the weather, so probably the best thing to do on a sunny day is to find a shady spot to take your photograph. In order for this to work best, the background, the subject, and the camera should all be shaded from direct sunlight.
When there is no shade to be found, consider the angle of the sun relative to your subject’s face. There are two positions that minimize the effect of shadows cast by the sun. If your subject stands almost directly facing the sun then the shadows on their face will be at their smallest. Don’t have them absolutely directly facing the sun or you might get your own shadow into the shot.
Another option is to have the sun behind them so their entire face is in shadow. Again, don’t have the sun directly behind them or you could end up with some flare in your picture. You may have to adjust the exposure for this type of shot but it’s the best set up if you can also use fill in flash on your camera.
Having sorted out the background and the lighting, the next thing to consider is your subject and the position of your camera relative to them. Eyeline can mean different things depending on the context but here I’m just referring to your subjects eye level. This is ideally where your camera should be, at the same height as their eyes or very slightly below.
In professional portraiture, the height of the camera relative to the subject’s eyes plays an extremely important part in determining how they will look in the final image. Even slight changes of this aspect can make a profound difference. The most neutral place to be is at the same level and, unless you’re making a portrait as opposed to just taking a picture, this is the best place to be.
When dealing with a subject who is much taller than you then you should think of asking them to sit down so you can get on their eye level. If that’s not possible, try standing farther away and zooming in. This will reduce the angle at which you are pointing up and minimize the effect.
In most cases the problem arises when you’re photographing someone sitting down or a child or even a pet. It is almost always going to be a better picture if it is taken from the eye level of your subject. You don’t need to take my word for it, try it for yourself the next time you are in this situation.
If you follow all of the above, you should be able to take a decent photo of anyone but that is still some way away from making a portrait, which is an attempt to show your subject’s character and personality as well as being a good picture of them. Once you have mastered all the tips, you might be inspired into taking this one stage further and stepping into the realms of portraiture.
