Nizhny Novgorod: the Forgotten Third Capital

There was a time when people called Nizhny Novgorod the third capital of Russia. After Saint Petersburg being the cultural capital and Moscow being the political capital, Nizhny, as we locals call it, was the wallet. The reason behind this was the trade fair, it was even international back in Tsar times, and numerous wealthy merchants that left their mark on Nizhny.

После того, как Санкт-Петербург стал культурной столицей, Москва — политической, Нижний, как мы, местные, его называем, стал кошельком. Причиной этому стала ярмарка, которая еще в царские времена была международной, а также влияние многочисленных богатых купцов, которые оставили свой след в Н.Новгороде.

Even though Nizhny is constantly ranked high on the charts of top Russian cities to visit, its reputation still isn’t high. Namely among foreigners this ‘‘wallet’’ isn’t opened and for good reason because it was a closed secret during the Soviet years. Well, there are still secrets here, but I have been allowed to share some of them with you. Of course, I will not divulge all of them, just enough to wet your whistle.

Несмотря на то, что Нижний постоянно лидирует в рейтингах лучших городов России для посещения, его репутация пока не высока. Иностранцы этот «кошелёк» не открывали, и по уважительной причине — в советские годы город был секретным. Что ж, здесь всё ещё есть секреты, но мне разрешили поделиться некоторыми из них с вами. Конечно, я не стану разглашать их все, а так, лишь чуть-чуть (букв.: промочить горло).

Any visitor that comes to Nizhny has to first and foremost visit the Kremlin with all of the splendor packed inside. You can even see tanks inside the walls, real tanks that were used in the Second World War and produced here, locally, in Avtozavod. Another secret of Nizhny is the car museum located in Avtozavod. The best way to get here is to take the underground from the Moscow train station, where the buses and trains arrive, to Gorki Square station.

За его стенами — настоящие танки, которые использовались во время Второй мировой войны и производились здесь. Ещё один секрет Нижнего — автомобильный музей, расположенный на Автозаводе. Лучше всего добираться сюда — это поехать на метро от Московского вокзала, куда прибывают автобусы и поезда, и ехать до станции площади Горького.

From the underground you will walk along the Gorki square which is dedicated to the famous author of this city. There are lots of museums dedicated to this author and even the city was named after him during the Soviet era. Then you will make your way down the Pokrovskaya Street with lots of souvenir stands and stunning statues. After going around the Kremlin, there are churches and museums as well as those tanks. To do this, you will only need to climb to the top of the hill. Check out the panorama of the Volga river and admire the statue of the pilot Valery Chkalov. Off to your right, the cable car to Bor is visible. From here you can go down to the world-famous stairs named after Chkalov or find a bus nearby that will take you to the football stadium.

После того, как вы обойдёте Кремль, на пути вам встретятся храмы и музеи, а также те самые танки. Для этого вам нужно будет лишь подняться на вершину холма. Взгляните на панораму реки Волги и полюбуйтесь памятником лётчику Валерию Чкалову. Справа видна канатная дорога на Бор. Отсюда вы можете спуститься по всемирно известной лестнице имени Чкалова или найти автобус поблизости, который доставит вас на стадион.

This stadium is great in any season because there is a sports area where you can ice skate in the winter and roller skate in the summer. Apart from this, the stadium also offers many other sports activities, or you can simply explore the area. Nearby, there is a big cathedral to Alexander Nevsky that is worth checking out. On the other side along the Volga river there is a newly built embankment develops every year.

The surrounding territories of Nizhny are also worth visiting. On top of these places that are accessible throughout the year, Nizhny is famous for many festivals and exhibition shows.
